Amer – Connecting technology, innovation and people to the future
Now Chief Executive Officer of Total Abu Al Bukhoosh, Amer has built his international career starting work with Total as a Reservoir Engineer.
Innovation - Key to Future
As the CEO of Total ABK, Amer is responsible for safely delivering the company’s production and financial results. Amer is also fully committed to people development to ensure succession plans and that Emiratization targets are met successfully.
Amer highlights that ABK is a very mature field, but innovative technology has made recovery rates (46% on average, but up to 70%) among the highest in the Total group and in this region. He explains that: “Today all our producing oil wells are artificially lifted, with multilateral drains on over half of them. Gas Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) accounts for 15% of daily oil production, while the results from a chemical EOR field-pilot have been very promising. Redevelopment studies to ensure profitable production for the next 20 years are ongoing and the ABK road map toward 70% recovery rates is unfolding.” He also points out that “this technological success is supported by a continuous strive for excellence in HSE.”
For Amer, the development of ABK’s employees is a top priority. As he explains “The Emirati work force has evolved, and now Emiratis occupy over 45% of senior management positions.”
He is also very proud because empowerment of women is a real success. “Two women are part of the seven top executives reporting directly to the CEO. In addition, Total ABK is the only company in Abu Dhabi to have women employees working in rotation in the field.”
Another employment focus that Amer considers very important is the Total ABK-VEDC academy. It was established in 2008 with an objective to train and develop young Emiratis as operators and technicians at offshore operating fields. A new group has graduated each year since 2011 and, with sustainable demand for such technical trainees, all 70 graduates have found employment.
Sharing of Technology
Amer explains how it is essential to ABK to share technology with other stakeholders. “ADNOC has a very keen interest in what we do at Total Abu Al Bukhoosh due to the technology that has already been implemented, which has resulted in the highest oil recovery in Abu Dhabi so far. Whatever lessons are learnt from ABK can be applied to other fields which are still in their infancy.”
Total ABK is also an important contributor to local conferences and workshops to share know how. Amer reminds us that Total ABK won two first prizes in the prestigious ADNOC HSE awards, which took place in 2014.
For Amer, technology and innovation belong to Total UAE's vision for the future. Especially, a re-development study aimed to extend the life cycle of Total ABK for another 20-30 years is ongoing.
"Be honest and always speak your mind. Consider challenges as opportunities to develop and expand your comfort zone. I take people development seriously and really believe in it."
