Alain – Sustaining Total’s legacy in the UAE

Armed with an extensive career and expertise in conceptual engineering, project and assets management, Alain is the current Managing Director of Total E&P UAE.

Used to Challenging Situations

Alain has always faced challenging situations. In the 90s he led all Headquarter activities (Engineering and R&D) in the early development of the Elgin-Franklin field (High-pressure, High-temperature field in the North Sea). Then he was part of the Angolan deepwater development adventure as a project director of the Rosa-Lirio project, promoting long subsea tie-backs to an FPSO. More recently he took an active part in the managing role that Total took in the OPCO, operator of the Kashagan Field.

Leading Total E&P UAE

He is now leading the new Total company, which in parallel with Total ABK, is managing the Group’s interests in the Abu Dhabi OPCOs; “I am very proud and honored to become the link in this long chain of competency which has, over the years, built and strengthened the very strong partnership existing between Total and Abu Dhabi,” says Alain. He ensures that this matter remains sustainable in a period that represents a turning point for traditional concessions. ADCO, and soon ADMA and ABK, will reach the end of a historic concession. This is happening at a challenging point for the aging fields, which are still very well managed, maintaining a prudent recovery rate and a track record in terms of safety and installation integrity, but facing new requirements such as providing jobs to a larger number of Emirati nationals, reducing the environmental footprint through electrification, and using entirely new technology.

He ensures that the Group's core values are adhered to, while supporting activities that all OPCOs are requesting, in particular in the subsurface domain, but also in new requirements such as the promotion of research activities or human capability development in-country. last year Total launched a very ambitious program, a research alliance with ADNOC, the Petroleum institute and the Masdar Institute of Technology in Abu Dhabi, aiming to explore Digital Rock Physics’ capacity for predicting the reservoir behavior in carbonate rocks.

Involved in a New Era of Collaboration

The signature of the new ADCO concession, where Total has been selected to be an “Asset Leader” on two of the largest onshore fields in Abu Dhabi, opens a new era of collaboration. Alain, as the “International Company Representative”, is actively working with his team and the ADCO teams to start the application of this new operating model, which shall maintain Total as a privileged partner of the UAE for many years to come.
